Sometimes in such situations Leva will rig two or even three different lines and baits off a single kite, which helps cover an even wider swath of water searching for kingfish.Ĭovering a wide surface area also is important to successful kingfishing, says Leva, because sometimes mackerel are on the shallow side of a drop-off, while other days they're on the deep side. That's a real advantage when pulling up to a spot and there are a lot of boats fishing the same water. ![]() But by positioning a 'Fishing Kite' off the side of a boat, an angler can put one or more live baits far away from his boat, thereby 'covering' a larger amount of water.Īnother plus for this system, according to Leva, is that lines leading to baits from a kite are up in the air, so other boats trolling in the area can pass beneath a kite without fouling lines. "Flat lines trailing off the stern and downrigger lines covering a water column are what most kingfish anglers employ. "A trolling or drifting boat only can 'cover' so much water by using conventional techniques," Leva explains. Alex Leva, with the Team Hydra-Sports fishing group, insists that kite fishing has been one important edge his group has used to place high in king mackerel tournaments and boating mega-size mackerel about everywhere the fish are available. ![]() Catching only an occasional big kingfish using an offshore "Fishing Kite" isn't likely to make this trolling system catch fire throughout the saltwater mackerel world. ![]()
